2022:  92 Points, Cam Douglas MS (December 2022) Review: “Very bright appearance with ruby and purple hues leading to a bouquet of pinosity and fruit intensity, varietal scents of dark cherry and crunchy red apple skin. Some black current scents with a quiet layer of wood spice suggesting vanilla. Dry, taut, youthful and lush with flavours that reflect the bouquet, some chalky tannins and acidity accentuate the core fruit flavours and carry them through the palate. Well made and ready to drink now through to 2027.”

Single vineyard Waihopai Valley grapes (sub region of Wairau Valley, Marlborough) harvested March 2022. Once crushed and de-stemmed, they go through a 5 day cold soak before warming and inoculating. When the ferment warms to 32 degrees, the grapes are then hand plunged twice daily to extract colour and flavour. As a fruit forward style, there is limited oak in the maturation process.

This medium bodied Pinot Noir offers ripe cherry aromatics, smooth tannins and a lingering savoury finish. The hints of minerality and spice will intensify with age.

Drink now or cellar for 3-5 years.

Works well with lamb, pork and (of course) duck

"Translucent in the glass, the nose bounces with fresh red berries, crushed flowers and spices. The light-bodied palate is delicate yet textured, supported by a soft line of talc-like tannins. Overall, this makes for easy summer sipping."

Review of 2016 Duck Hunter Pinot Noir by wine critic Dean Major.

February 2017

Duck Hunter Marlborough Pinot Noir 2016 is a well made, varietal, crowd-pleasing, medium bodied reminder that Marlborough produces considerably more than just sauvignon blanc. The wine is dry without being arid, its fine tannins and a hint of lightly charred oak giving it just enough grip and backbone to prevent it from being too soft. This delicious pinot noir is no cherry-berry fruit bomb, but is savoury, moreish and very drinkable.

Made to be drunk in the short term, Duck Hunter Marlborough Pinot Noir 2016 will develop for a couple of years after vintage, then hold for a couple more. Why wait.
