Vondeling traces its origins back to 1704 when the land was first granted to Oloff Bergh, a Swedish immigrant, by Governor Van Der Stel. It is situated half way between Wellington and Paarl on the slopes of the Paardeberg Mountain and has breathtaking views of mountains and vineyards in all directions.
The farm was bought by Julian Johnsen, Anthony Ward and Richard Gower in 2002, at which point they embarked on a major reconstruction programme, which included extensive replanting and the installation of a state of the art winery. Since then the farm has expanded further with the purchase of the neighbouring Klein Vondeling farm and more recently St Clements, from South African golfer David Frost. The winery at St Clements has also been extensively renovated and expanded, with the addition of a tasting/function room and in 2013 the building of a church, for weddings and other events. The result is a stable of 12 different wines of which five have 4 or more stars from the Platter’s South African wine Guide. They have also received excellent reviews from Robert Parker and numerous awards. Lunches are available in the tasting rooms and all visitors are made most welcome. It is recommended that you do book in advance.
